The One Goal of Effective Church Communications

19 March, 2016 By Yvon Prehn

5 Steps of Effective Church ComThere is one goal and one foundational purpose in all we do in church communications and that is to make disciples.

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matt: 28:18

These verses are our marching orders, what we are supposed to be about as representatives of Jesus here on earth-that seems obvious. The actions required by these verses also seems obvious-go, baptize, teach-with the end result of making disciples.

Why discipleship is essential for the church to survive—and why your communications are essential to develop disciples

What is  painfully obvious in America today (and most of North America) is that as a whole, we aren't doing a very good job [Read more...]

Church Signs, what works and what to be careful about

7 March, 2016 By Yvon Prehn 4 Comments

Church signs, important tools for ministry
Church signs are important tools for ministry, here are tips to make the most of them.

Recently a church communication elder asked me about the effectiveness of electronic church signs.  She sent this link in reference to the sign their church was considering: http://curbappealled.com/. She added that a church member had donated the money for it and asked for my comments on it. I'm always happy to respond to requests from church communicators and though I can't guarantee how quickly I will respond, please send questions or suggestions for content on this site to: yvon@effectivechurchcom.com.

First, I'd like to offer some comments on a sign like this and then on signs overall. If you have any more comments on signs, examples of effective signage, or sources for good ones, please add them to the comments below.

As to my answer whether or not to get a professionally designed electronic sign—the answer to this is easy—go for it! Particularly, if the other businesses in your area have similar signs, you want people to be able to clearly find you as a church. Having said that a sign like this can be very good for your church, following are a few other comments that might be helpful.

Easter is a great time to create a church overview booklet

3 March, 2016 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Many people will visit your church on Easter who will have no idea what your church does on a regular basis. If you want to fully inform them about your church, consider creating a Church Overview Booklet.

This is a lot of work, but it can have positive results for many months to come. Below is a PDF that explains them in more detail and gives examples of some.

Christian Post interviews Yvon Prehn about How to get people to come back to church after Christmas and Easter

28 February, 2016 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

How to get people back to church
Lots of people attend church for holiday events--here is advice to get them to come back on a continuing basis.

How to get the people who come to church on Christmas and Easter to return and to begin to attend on a regular basis is one of the biggest challenges for churches. The holidays offer great opportunities for people visit the church, but attending church twice a year seldom results in any significant spiritual decision or life-change.

For ideas on how to change that with suggestions from Ed Setzer of LifeWay and Yvon Prehn of Effective Church Communications, check out this article:

A reminder that God always meets us when and where we need Him, a poem for comfort and evangelism

22 February, 2016 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Yvon's note: As I'm going through this website updating links, I came across this poem. It is long past 9/11, but life is still hard. We many not be part of a national tragedy, but we all carry pain, hurts, burdens, and fears. We many never know why in this life—but if we know Jesus, we know He is there. Somehow, always, He is enough. I needed the encouragement of this poem today and I'm sharing it again because some of you may need it also.

If you have not read this poem "Meet me in the Stairwell" (it has been all over the web) it is one of the most powerful reminders of God's presence on 9/11 and in all the difficult times in our lives. In addition to being a reminder of God's comfort, this could also be used as a powerful evangelism or outreach piece. It's a reminder that our Lord seeks the lost. We can reach to Him, but first, last, and always He is reaching down to us.

I've included the text of the poem below with credit to the author, Stacey Randal. [Read more...]
