A Free Template of the Christmas Story and short gospel presentation based on “Hark the Herald Angels Sing!”

11 December, 2021 By Yvon Prehn 1 Comment

Christmas evangelism bulletin insert size
This is a set of bulletin insert-size Christmas evangelism publications--please share!

This has been one of our most popular communications for Christmas—it's an upbeat, but thought-provoking presentation of the good news about Jesus for Christmas based on the popular hymn, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing!" and I wanted to share it with you this year.

When I first created the piece it was a full-size sheet and in a 3-panel brochure format, but after sending that out (CLICK HERE for original article and for 8 1/2 x 11-inch size flyers and for brochure size) I got a request to create a bulletin insert-size piece. What a great idea! And I was happy to do that. The images are below and below them a ZIP file for everyone to download ready-to-print PDFs, the editable MS Publisher file, and images of the pieces.

I wrote it and created the communications and you have my permission to share or use it in any way you want.

Be creative in how you use it

Of course, you can print them up and use them at Christmas outreach events or as a bulletin insert.

You can also copy the text or the entire communication and share it on social media for your church or personally.

It's also useful to make copies for your congregation to put into their Christmas letters. Either with the templates here or the ones in the link above (where there is a full-page version), you have my permission to upload any of the PDFs to your church websites for your people to download to print at home and share with their friends and family. I've printed them out for my Sunday School classes and people have greatly appreciated it.

Encourage your congregation to put them into their Christmas cards or enclose with gifts (remembering Jesus is the greatest gift of all!).

A Christmas letter you can use to share Jesus with your church, friends, and family

8.5 x 11 size Christmas Evangelism PDFs images_Page_2
A Christmas letter that explains the true meaning of Christmas is an essential outreach tool for your Christmas events.

We want our people to share their faith and this communication gives them an easy and non-threatening way to do it. One year, I posted the material below on our Adult Sunday School Class website and gave out a sample to our adult class. I printed the black and white image on a blue parchment-type paper. I encouraged them to go to the website and print it out for their Christmas letters and to share with friends. You are welcome to copy any or all of it and you can put them on your church or class website for your people to share.

Below the sample that I shared with my class are some color versions, spot-color separations, and versions that are in a tri-fold brochure format. All of these are available in two ZIP files at the end of this article. This letter/brochure or any other piece that clearly explains the reason for Christmas and the meaning of salvation in Jesus is essential for your church to share at all your holiday outreach events. Jesus came to save us from our sins, not to give us reasons to buy stuff or even so we can have wonderful family celebrations. We need to be clear about the true Christmas message to people who may only come to our church at this time of year--this piece gives you an easy and effective way to do it. [Read more...]

4 ways to overcome the fear of being too pushy about Christmas evangelism

15 December, 2016 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Prophet Elijah preaching judgement
You don't have to be like the Prophet Elijah preaching judgement, but don't be afraid to share the true message of Christmas.

True story that prompted this blog:

As part of the process of planning their upcoming Christmas outreach, the communication team from a church, that will remain unnamed, asked me how they could get a better response from people who attended their Christmas outreach last year.

The presentation itself was not the problem. It was an almost Broadway-quality musical drama paired with a gourmet dessert buffet. Each night was full with visitors from the community and their response was enthusiastic.

But the following Sunday almost none of huge turnout for the Christmas program showed up for church and as far as they knew, nobody became a Christian because of the event, even though they did it as an evangelism outreach. Why, they asked me, didn't more respond? [Read more...]

Motivational flyer to encourage your congregation to invite people to Christmas events

5 December, 2015 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Bulletin Insert, Why invite to Christmas Events #4
Use this bulletin insert to encourage your congregation to invite friends and family to your Christmas events.

Why does your church do all the work you do for Christmas events, for the concerts, plays, family fun times?

The answer has two parts for most churches—the events are both for current members and for their unchurched friends, family, and those they work with and meet in the course of life. For your congregation, they often need a reminder that the events aren't just for their family, but that Christmas time is a great time to invite others.

This reminder is more important than a need to fill the church for all three Christmas Eve services. Jesus came to earth to provide salvation and many people outside the church today honestly don't know the reasons for his birth, life, death, and resurrection. Christmas is an appropriate time to invite share.

This bulletin handout will help you encourage your people to invite others to your Christmas services. CLICK HERE or on the image above to download a FREE PDF of the insert.

At the end of this article is a ZIP File for you to download that contains:

  • 3 more designs (see below for samples)
  • Ready-to-print PDFs of all 4 designs
  • Editable MS Publisher files of all 4 designs
  • Hi-res images of all

A Christmas brochure that explains the gospel–Hark the Herald Angels Sing, but why?

4 December, 2011 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Picture of Color artwork, side one
This brochure can be used as a give-away to share the good news about Jesus at any Christmas event.

Christmas events should always have a clear presentation of the good news of salvation in Jesus. Jesus is the "reason for the Season," but also your Christmas events are a time when people will be visiting your church who often don't come.

No matter how fantastic your music or program, no matter how delicious the food, you don't want anyone leaving without knowing about Jesus.

This piece, "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, but why?" has been one of our most popular and frequently printed Christmas communications. In the past we've given you this piece either in MS Word format or in PDFs on one page.

Below is the MS Word text and to see this communication in various formats on one page, you can CLICK HERE.

For this year, a NEW tri-fold brochure in MS Word

This piece can be used not only to give out at church events, but it also works to give to your people to put into Christmas letters, to share in their neighborhoods, to give out at work, to friends or however you can think of to use it. The text below is for everyone to copy and use. On the brochures in addition to this basic text is also a back panel with additional websites for people to check out the Christian faith in more detail and a place for you to personalize the brochure for your church. Below it is a ZIP file that contains: an MS Word Editable files of all the versions below, ready-to-print PDFs of each version and images of each one.

MS Word File of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing, but why?"

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing! but why? At Christmas—did you ever wonder what that joyous singing was about? It certainly couldn't have been for Jesus. Leaving the glory of heaven to inhabit a body that would get tired and hurt from a hard day working in the carpenter shop wasn't reason for joy. Then to preach the message he'd been sent to communicate not only to have the majority of folks not believe him, but to crucify him for it—no, the singing wasn't for Jesus.

It probably wasn't for the angels themselves. It would give them no joy to watch for the next 33 years the incredible wonder of the Creator of the universe playing with little kids, speaking to the storm and quieting it like a child, watching him restore sight and wholeness to the hurting and life itself to a friend who had died, and to have all that love rejected. No, the angels weren't singing for themselves.

I think the angels were singing for us. The celebration was because they knew Jesus was the true connection between people and God. They knew Jesus could quiet that empty place in each heart that God created and only He can fill. They knew Jesus came to earth to bridge the gap between God and man by his death on the cross. That's why we have Christmas and the angels sang.

Their song is for you if you know Jesus. If not, if the place is your heart is still empty and without Jesus, this year consider filling it with him. But think carefully first. Though salvation in Jesus is a free gift, it isn't one without cost. You get it free, but Jesus died to give it to you. Also, if you accept Jesus' gift of salvation, know He takes it very seriously and you won't ever be the same. A new life will start in you, the very life of God. If you want God's gift in all His fullness, chances are that He might ask for some changes your life to make room for new things He'll want to bring in. Don't be afraid; you won't be losing out. You'll be gaining a whole way of life that will be more satisfying than you can imagine. You'll want to read the Bible; you'll want to talk to God in prayer; you'll want to go to a church and meet other members of your new family of God. You'll want to grow spiritually and become all your Creator meant for you to be. It can be scary. You'll be under new management, but whatever you might be tightly clutching now will seem no more important to you than it does to a child who gladly sets aside a toy tricycle when he realizes his parents have a real bicycle for him.

The first Christmas began with a glorious song from angels, but the song isn't over. Did you know the angels want to sing for you?The Bible tells us that the angels today sing for joy whenever someone accepts the greatest gift of all—Jesus. If you want that gift, wherever you are, out-loud or in your heart, say something like this to him:

Dear Jesus,

I want the gift you want to give me. I want to be connected with my God this Christmas. I know that I'm not. I know there are things in my life, my sin, my pride, even some of my good deeds that I thought could take me to God, but I know on my own I won't make it. I realize Jesus came to earth that first Christmas to do what I could not do—to die for me, so I can live with you. I don't understand it all, but I want to ask you anyway to come into my life, to be my Savior, to be with me now and forever. Help me to learn what I need to learn and to grow and live a life that will be pleasing to you. Amen.

If you prayed that prayer, listen quietly. The angels are singing—you may not hear them with your ears, but a song of joy that will never end has begun in your heart.
