Jesus, the Reason for the Season postcard, flyer, program cover or bulletin insert

5 November, 2016 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Jesus is the reason for the Season postcard
Our world needs to be reminded that Jesus truly is the "Reason for the Season." This publication can help you do that.

We know that Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas, we know Jesus is the reason for the season, but many of the people who visit your church or are in the neighborhood around it don't have any idea what that means. This communication piece will help.

Though it is done is a casual, upbeat style, the content is actually taken from the Nicene Creed, one of the most widely accepted creeds in the Christian Church and one that defines the identity and role of Jesus as our Savior. Below are pictures of the file. One is in color and one in grey scale. The grey scale looks good printed on some a rustic-looking or colored paper.

GIS: Editable Church Conference Booklet TEMPLATE in MS Word

27 October, 2016 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Journal Cover for MS Word Template
This is the cover for a wonderful booklet design you can modify for many ministry uses in MS Word.

Of course one of the greatest benefits of our Great Idea Swap is the inspiration you get from looking at what other church communicators create, but even better is when you can take it and modify it for your own church communication uses. That's what you'll be able to do with this wonderful little conference notebook sent in by Vicki Coulter of Christ United Methodist Church.

It is made up of 8 1/2 x 11 in. pages folded in half, which is easy to print in small quantities at your church office. The sample was sent in as a PDF, which you can see the from pages illustrated below ( just 6 of 12 are illustrated). It's hard to see from the illustrations alone what a wonderful file it is, but you can immediately see how useful a layout like this can be for anything from Advent booklets to devotionals.

To make it useful for you, I then took the PDF and converted it to MS Word to see if that would work out so that you could edit it for your uses. That worked out well. CLICK on the first image and that will bring up a larger image and gallery you can scroll through to see the pages better.

However, when doing a conversion to MS Word, the tricky part is always making sure the pages print correctly double-sided and it does work! I also played around with creating a couple of alternate covers just for fun and that worked great also. The examples of them are below.

Everyone gets access to the ideas in our Great Idea Swap, but for Effective Church Communication Members, I also have a short video that shows how to be sure you have the correct print settings to print out the modified template, plus the PDF file and the MS Word file if you want to create your own booklet.

Two more fun samples sent in with the booklet [Read more...]

SIX TIPS to chose paper wisely for the greatest church communication impact

3 October, 2016 By Yvon Prehn 2 Comments

Paper choices for church communications
It's easy to get buried with paper choices for your church communications, but this article will help you choose what is most effective.

As we go into the holiday season, many churches are tempted to use colored papers to print brochures, flyers, newsletters and other materials. Lots of orange, brown, green and red paper will be used and though these colors might be appropriate to the season, they may not be the best to get across your message and help people show up to your events. Following are SIX TIPS on paper choice for the holiday season and year round to make for more effective church communications.

#1 Remember Readability

The most important aspect of the paper you use is how well it contributes to the readability of your newsletter or other communication. If people can't read your message nothing else really matters.

People don’t judge a holiday communication based on how fancy the paper is, what color it is or if it is slick or not. What matters is how easy is it to read. If a publication is difficult to read, today’s busy, stressed out readers will simply put it aside and won’t read it.

With these comments in mind, let's look in more detail on:

  • Paper opacity
  • Paper color
  • Publication reproduction method

Sample of an EFFECTIVE church calendar postcard

20 September, 2016 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

church postcard sample
You don't have to be fancy to inform people about important events at church. Postcards are a great way to do it!

This isn't a fancy publication, but I think if more churches would send out something like this, the impact for the Kingdom of God would be tremendous!

I'm saying that because we know many people today for good and bad reasons (have to work or choose sports) don't always attend church on Sundays. But that doesn't mean they may not want to attend other events at the church at other times. However, in most churches, if you aren't there on Sunday, you miss out knowing what else is going on because you didn't get the bulletin. Some churches may post it online, but if you don't have access to a computer or don't bother to check out the church website regularly, you won't see it.

The wonderful effectiveness of POSTCARDS

Postcards get taken from the mailbox, read quickly and often are then posted on the refrigerator serving as a continual POSTER of what is going on at the church.

A postcard like the one below, created by Ebenezer United Church,  is incredibly effective in how it reminds people of what is going on at the church. Below is a picture, at the end of this article a download for members of Effective Church Communications. Click on the image to see the printed side more clearly and then ECC Members can download the PDF file below.

Like the example above showed, you don't have to be fancy
