Things don't always go as we want in the church office at Christmas or any other time--here are some tips to help.

Ed. note: We all dream of what the holidays should be--everything perfect and peace and love all around. But if we are working at a church, we also know things don't always go as planned. When this happens, Gayle's advice that follows will, as it always does, encourage and equip you to handle the conflict well in your service for the Lord.

Growing involves having experiences—most pleasant, some not. Positive lessons can be learned even by negative encounters. Here is one assistant’s account of how she grew through adversity. [Read more...]

Words or images? What works best to communicate your church message?

12 December, 2012 By Yvon Prehn 1 Comment

Words or images, what works best to communicate our church message?

Here are some blogs that expand on the topic in the video:

Why words and images need each other–the feedback loop of meaning

We’ve all heard the phrase, "a picture is worth a thousand words"– a phrase which I consider one of the most meaningless and destructive phrases to meaningful communication ever coined. That is because without words, the proper response to that statement is, "which thousand?" [Read more...]

Ebook: What every church leader needs to know about church communications

1 December, 2012 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

What Church Leaders Need to Know About Church Communications
Church leaders must be involved in the church communication process, this book shows how.

An effective church communication ministry that enables unchurched people to find Jesus as Savior and grow to mature disciples takes the joint efforts of all the church staff. Church communications that fully fulfill the Great Commission take more than a church administrator who knows how to create professional-looking publications. They require involved pastors and leaders.

Unfortunately, this involvement is rare and that lack of involvement results in less than effective communications and often frustrated church communicators. This does not mean church leaders need to know how to do church communications, but they need to understand how they are done. Leaders also need to set the vision for the goals for the communication ministry and be certain to evaluate and follow-up communication projects. This book will help your church leaders understand the need for their involvement and the limits to their communication involvement in this vital area of church leadership, management and growth.

Below is the Table of Contents for the book. The ebook is free for Effective Church Communication Members or you can buy it as an immediate download below. [Read more...]

Church Office tips for sanity and joy as you prepare for the holidays

26 November, 2012 By grhilligoss@gmail.com Leave a Comment

Christmas Tree, keep it a season for joy
Thought there is always so much to do, here are some tips to help you keep your sanity and joy.

Can it be possible that Christmas and the holidays related to it are just around the proverbial corner?

Many church office professionals say this season has a way of sneaking up on them. It isn’t a matter of not knowing the dates— it is just that before we feel ready the celebrations are here. At both church and home there are more activities to plan, more projects to do, more pressure, more hurry. Too often what should be a joyful time becomes one of stress and frustration.

This year can be different. Really. You may not be able to change what goes on around you, but you can change your responses and you can control your own expectations and activities. A caveat: The answer is not to move everything up a few weeks. As a friend remarked, “At our church all the Christmas programs and parties are over by the first of December. The 25th doesn’t seem like the day at all.”

Ideas for keeping spirits bright— [Read more...]

Write to reach today’s audiences in your church–book updated

8 November, 2012 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Writing, Editing, Proofing ebook
People will read what you write if you follow the advice in this book.

"Nobody reads what we write!" is a common complaint from all church communicators. Often the assumption that goes with it is that people simply don't care about the Christian faith anymore and that's why they don't read.

In reality people do care tremendously about their lives and eternal destinies--as the bestseller response to self-help and popular spirituality shows. The reason people often don't read what is written in church publications is because much of what is written in church publications both in print and digital formats isn't written in a way that makes the message clear and easy to respond to. And the primary reason this happens is that few people in the church realize that writing that reaches people today is not the same style of writing that got you an "A" from your seminary professor.
