Bulletin insert example: compassionate, timely fund-raising for current spring disasters

6 March, 2012 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

WECLA Severe spring storms Bulletin inserthen disaster happens, some of the first responders are always the churches. Their work doesn't often make the evening news, but I know it brings joy to our Lord.

How we respond is also a powerful witness to our world, not only in our work, but our works. A blog linked to the ECLA disaster site (http://blogs.elca.org/disasterresponse/) quoted one pastor who challenges us during this Lenten season before Easter: “There is resurrection even in this life. You can live again in houses that looked like tombs." That is a message we all need to hear and share with our world.

Disaster assistance is costly and raising money for it always a challenge. I've long been a fan of the power of church bulletin inserts and I just received one as I was finishing up my newsletter to church communicators that I wanted to pass on to you. There are few other tools that can be quickly and easily created plus providing immediate impact to and a plan for action for your congregation.

This example is from the ECLA church. The example is to the left and if you click on the image you can download a copy of it.

It is an excellent example of this type of publication because:

  • It states the need clearly and concisely
  • It asks for help
  • It tells you what will happen to your donation

I'm passing this along to you,  not only as a great example of what can be done to tell your congregation about needs and to ask for donations, but if your church does not have an outreach program like this, I'm sure ECLA wouldn't mind at all if you used theirs.

Take a minute to pray

In the midst of your busy day, take a minute to pray for all the people going through these very hard times.

  • Pray  for victims and first responders.
  • Pray for those who clean up and rebuild.
  • Pray for strength, peace, and healing of communities.
  • Pray for comfort for those who have lost loved ones and healing for the injured.
  • Pray that the church of Jesus Christ will bear a strong witness to the world that no matter what the storms of life (literally and figuratively) that we have Savior who is with us in the storm and who will see us safely home.

Why with incredible communication tools, still declining church attendance?

17 January, 2012 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

The power of mobile phones doesn't replace the church bulletin for communication in the church.
The power of mobile phones doesn't replace the church bulletin for communication in the church.

In spite of visitors coming to us every week and  though we live in a time when we have the most extraordinary communication tools ever available to the church—the Internet and email for free, instant communications around the world, PowerPoint and video production in our services, and social networking connections, cell phones and texting, plus the ability to produce books, newsletters, and print items in the church office that required publishing companies and advertising agencies to produce in the past, still—the Christian faith is losing ground in many parts of the world. Many churches aren’t growing.

In a recent poll that asked people to give their religious affiliation, the largest number answered: “none.” Granted, there are many factors that account for this situation, but I wonder if one of them has to do with the reality that we may not be doing our best job communicating the truth of the gospel message and the importance and benefits of being part of a local church?

How can we best communicate the messages of the church?

Multimedia, social media available on the web and through our mobile phones may make a church look cutting-edge and may wow with their technical wizardry, but they don’t seem to effectively stem the tide of church defections. They are useful, but they don't communicate well to a visitor who walks into the church and knows nothing about it.

But there is a communication piece that can touch lives, inform, call for decisions, and make connections. It is a piece so powerful that both seekers and regular attendees will read, at least part and often all of it, every week. It’s a communication piece they will reach for, post on their refrigerators, and keep for reference. That piece is the church bulletin.

The content in the bulletin that matters

This humble print publication, the church bulletin, has the potential to change lives for time and eternity, but to do that it has to have content in it that:

  • Explains what is going on right now in the church
  • Invites people to the other activities in the church
  • Challenges people to become a Christian and grow in their faith
  • Clearly links people to the website, social media, and church staff for more information

Making a bulletin that will have an eternal impact on the people in your community is spiritual warfare. That isn't an overstatement. In any war, one of the first targets destroyed is always the communication center. If an army can't communicate, it can't meet its goals. If there is one piece that ties together the vision and ministries of the church, that connects seekers with help and the hurting in the congregation with help, it is the church bulletin. If the enemy of human souls can make your church unconcerned, routine and ultimately ineffective with your church bulletin, many of the ministries in your church will not do all they could for the furtherance of the kingdom of God.

If your bulletin is not effective, visitors won't connect and come to know Jesus and members won't grow to discipleship maturity. If your church is not accomplishing your goals in growth in numbers and spiritual maturity in your members, before you do anything else (beyond of course, prayer and soul-searching) take an honest look at your church bulletin and see if you are using it in the many ways you could be.

Year-end giving– links to donor resources–and a suggestion for your communication ministry

27 December, 2011 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Before the year closes out many people want to make the most of their charitable giving contributions, below is a link to the IRS site that explains charitable giving guidelines and might be useful if people call or email the church office with questions.

Here is the IRS LINK overall for charitable giving:
http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc506.html

For Canadian charitable giving information: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/chrts-gvng/dnrs/menu-eng.html

Ask for what you need

In addition to this link, think about asking people to consider a designated donation to the communications ministry at the church. Good, complete, on-going communication is a vital part of every effective church. However, it is a ministry that needs resources to function at its best.

Here is a list of some of the things that designated gifts could be used for:

Updated computer--for producing communications in the church office, the prices of really powerful computers have dropped greatly in price. For less than $500 you can get a computer today that would have cost thousands just a few years ago and that can greatly improve your productivity.

Why MS Publisher is recommended for Church Com teams
This ebook is free for ECC Members and an inexpensive download for those who aren't. Take time to look it over and learn how Publisher can accomplish more than you ever imagined for your church and at a very low cost.

Updated software--if you don't have MS Publisher, a fantastic gift would be the software and a months worth of training for only $25  at http://www.lynda.com. CLICK HERE to go to an ebook that illustrates all the benefits of MS Publisher and gives you two great resources of where to get it at an amazingly low nonprofit price.

Updated production equipment--if you haven't looked at some of the current copier machines and digital duplicators, you'll be amazed at the updates in technology and how you can print high quality materials at a very low price. Ask for money to put into a fund and then schedule some time with your local, trusted dealer to show you options. Don't get things printed by outside companies until you've explored the options for your church.

Updated training--if you aren't a member of Effective Church Communications, check out the resources HERE to get an overview of the training videos, free ebooks, downloadable templates and ready-to-print MS Publisher files all available for only $9.99 a month or $99 a year. There is NO other place that provides this kind of basic and useful training for churches.  CLICK HERE to go to the membership page for more information and to sign up.

If you didn't get a chance to ask before the year's end

Effective Church Communications supports the ministry of every other part of the church--it needs to be supported as aggressively as missions or children's or music or any other area, because if it is done well--church communications will make every other ministry area more effective.

If you didn't give an opportunity for people in your church to give to the communication ministry before the end of the year, consider a special offering at the start of the year and assure all your ministries that they will have a more effective New Year!

Christmas church bulletin example

15 December, 2011 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

After sending out the Hark the Herald Angels gospel presentation, I just got this example of how one of the ECC Members used it and wanted to share it.

It is a wonderful example of how to put together a very clear and complete presentation of how to come to know Jesus personally at Christmas. Following is a picture of the bulletin--click on the images to download the PDF.
