Don’t be a secret-service Christian, how church communicators can help

11 October, 2012 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

When you do outreach in the name of Jesus, communicate about Him.
When you do outreach in the name of Jesus, don't be a secret Christian.

True story here about a lost opportunity to share Jesus:

In our area, one church frequently does a compassionate outreach at a Laundromat in an area of town where many homeless people do their laundry.

My husband, who is a bi-vocational pastor and who does handyman work to support our ministry habits, was on a job recently with a homeless young man. When he overheard him talking about "some guy who paid for my laundry," my husband asked him who did that and what they talked about.

The young man responded, "He didn't say anything—he and his wife just sat in a corner for two hours. I would have talked to him if he wanted—he put in ten bucks for me."

How sad! To pay for washer and dryer use for people who sometimes must choose between clean clothes and a decent meal is a fantastic way to demonstrate caring in the name of Jesus—IF people know you are doing it in the name of Jesus. If not, you may be considered nice, but perhaps a bit strange. [Read more...]

Church Bulletin Insert motivation for your congregation to invite friends to church Halloween Events

8 October, 2012 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

Halloween B Insert Photo
A bulletin insert to motivate your people to invite their friends for Halloween outreach events.

Many people forget that Halloween is a great time to share your faith. That's because it is one time of year when many people are thinking about death.

Though secular views are distorted, this provides an opportunity to start a discussion about the one person that conquered death--Jesus. To encourage your people to use this time of year to share their faith, I prepared this Halloween-themed bulletin insert.

It was designed to be used on a church bulletin insert, but it can be put into any regular communication with your congregation: email; newsletter, website, whatever you can think of, to motivate your people to use every event of the year as an opportunity to bring their friends to church and introduce them to Jesus. Simple Bulletin Cover with a clear explanation of what is going on in the service

16 September, 2012 By Yvon Prehn Leave a Comment

A simple bulletin with a clear service explanation
A simple, but clear bulletin that explains the service.

Here is an example of a very simple bulletin cover, that has a clear explanation of what is going on in the church service. Any church could create a cost-effective piece like this, though it would be especially appropriate for a church plant or one that is reaching out to unchurched people.

It would work well because it explains what is going on in a very friendly welcoming way and without jargon. It also doesn't look overly churchy. This is from an actual church bulletin and was given to me by a generous church communicator.

Following is information on how we created the image as well as the seeker and visitor friendly text for the bulletin cover.

How we created the image is illustrated in this video: Image editing excerpt from the video: Money and Time Saving Tips for Church Communications

Below is the text from the Bulletin that you can copy and use in your communications and below that is a ready-to-print PDF and editable MS Publisher template.

Welcome!
Thanks for
joining us today!

Here is what you can expect:
Our Worship Service: We will begin with about 30-40 minutes of singing. Feel free to sit, stand, sing, dance or just listen as we express our worship to God using all of our heart, mind, soul and body. If you don’t know the songs, hang on, we’ll sing them a couple of times-and don’t worry, we didn’t know them at first either.

The Message: A time of practical teaching from the Bible.

The Offering: This is a time for church members to share with the church financially how God has blessed them. If you are a visitor, don’t feel you have to contribute- the only gift we’d like from you is your Connection Card. Consider this service our
gift to you!

Prayer Time: there will be people up front after the service to pray for any needs you may have. Please come up if interested!

Refreshments: Join us for coffee, lemonade and munchies in the lobby after the service.
