One of the core teachings of Effective Church Communications is that we can take any seasonal celebration and use it as an opportunity to share the gospel.

It might seem that one of the more challenging holidays to apply that teaching is Halloween but in reality, it is one of the easiest ones. That's because this is the one time of year when people are thinking about the afterlife, of life after death. Granted the secular view of this is distorted, but it does make a great bridge to a discussion about the reality that we are eternally existing souls.

Most people believe they will live forever, but the question is, if we are going to live forever, what neighborhood will we live in?

Halloween acknowledges there is a neighborhood of hellish horror and evil. Though people might make fun of it, they can't help but wonder what truth there is to the existence of demons and everlasting punishment. Along with that is the almost universal belief or wish, if you will, of an afterlife of light reunited with loved ones.

But how can you be sure?

Halloween gives Christians the opportunity to share why they believe that Jesus is the only Savior who conquered death and who can give us eternal life and peace and a home in the neighborhood of joy if we trust Him as Savior.

See You at the Pole—challenges for the church to pray—bulletins, flyers, social media images

Pray for our students while they pray at the pole
Though the pray at the pole is an event organized by and for students, we can pray for them. Here are social media images and printable flyers to help you do that.

Let’s be honest, it would be terribly scary to pray in public around the flagpole of your school. But that is what the organizers of See You at the Pole are hoping that thousands of students will do on Wed. Sept 22, 2021. For one of the previous years, the organizers of the event challenged churches with this:

Did you have the courage as a teenager to meet early one morning outside your school and pray?

Would your courage be strengthened if you knew a group of adults had planned, prayed, and supported you in every way possible for weeks leading up to this day?

Though the organizers of See You at the Pole are adamant and rightly so, that the events of the day should be totally student-led and student-organized, those of us adults who love the students in our churches and communities can support them by prayer. We can pray that they are brave in identifying as people who believe in God, fearless in sharing that prayer is important, and that God uses their prayers to help bring many to know Jesus.

At the end of this post are files of social media images and printable flyers or bulletin insert images you can download and use to inform members of your congregation about what the students will be doing and to remind them to pray for the students while they are praying for their world. 25 years ago Gospel Light produced my first Desktop Publishing Training Video–I just found it and am sharing it

How some things change and how others stay the same! Below are two training videos from around 3 hours of training in creating communications with the computer which was a very NEW thing when I did the videos. I recently found them and decided to share them because it amazes me how the need for BASIC Training in church communication skills and the inspiration and motivation for why we do it in the church continues to be needed.

Below are the two videos and below them are the descriptions I put on the YouTube site. I know they are lengthy, but I do think they will be well worth your time to watch.

This video, How to Use Your Computer to Make Better Newsletters, Bulletins, and More was made 25 years ago but the basic design principles in it are still useful. The description that follows is the same for both PART ONE and PART TWO of the video.

I recently (August 2021) found a copy of this video set in my files and though there is some outdated content and I have no idea what I did to get my hair to look like it does in the video, the majority of the video content is extremely useful. In addition, basic skills training like what is presented here is very hard to find for church communicators.

For training, you can find lots on the latest social media channel you should be using. How to write in a way that reaches busy people, basic design principles for any media, how to manage and stay strong spiritually in this challenging work is much harder to find. Here is a FREE set of summer postcards to remind people to keep coming to church.

Here is a set of cards you can print to remind people to come to church during the summer.

The all the images were created as 1/4 page postcards in MS Publisher. I then made PDFs of them that are ready to print. I intentionally left a white margin around the images so if you print them in the church office and are a little off in your cutting them apart, you'll still be OK. If you get them professionally printed you might want to add run the image all the way to the edge of the template size the online companies provide. A great need addressed—a Video and Instagram images of Prayer for GRACE for all nations

A prayer for Grace for all nations
A prayer for Grace for all nations is desperately needed in our contentious times.

Grace, unmerited favor and kindness, which we receive from God and should share with our fellow pilgrims on this earth, is something we need now more than ever. To encourage that I created some Instagram images for you, plus the short video below.

Please watch the video as a prayer.

The materials above are an updating of a project a few years ago when I wrote up the acronym GRACE as a prayer to celebrate the 4th of July, taking as my inspiration the line from the song, "America, America, God shed his grace on thee."

You can grab the video from YouTube and use it however you'd like. Below are Instagram images I first made and that are illustrated in the video.
