This book will teach you the basics of many needed, but often not taught, communication skills in graphics, design, typography, writing, and managing. If you want your church communications to look more professional, you need this book. Available in print and ebook formats.

Most people who work on communication creation in churches have no training in design, layout, typography, and many related skills they need to do a good job. Training material is not easy to find because many of the materials available on communication design and related areas, require the use of expensive, advanced software and teach a secular, image-heavy approach that doesn't always fit the needs of the church audience.

This book provides basic training that can help every church communicator, even those with no previous graphic arts training create, write for, and manage a church communication ministry. This book is not a how-to on a particular software, but about the basic design and communication principles that form the foundation of effective communication creation.

This book is a scanned reprint of Yvon Prehn's earlier book, How to use your computer to create Better Bulletins, Newsletters, and More! All the examples in the book are from church communications and the advice is practical and Bible-inspired.

To be honest, the quality of the scans in the book isn't the greatest, but I felt the content was worth it to make this book available to you.

Church Administrator and Office Manager advice: learn from business magazine websites

In the past when I traveled to teach seminars (instead of the far more enjoyable online teaching I now do from beautiful Ventura, CA) as soon as I got on an airplane, I would head to the magazine collection and grab the Harvard Business Review. It is an excellent publication with well-written articles that often had useful application to church ministry. It is also a VERY expensive magazine and when my travel days were over, so was my enjoyment of it.

I was delighted to learn from a link sent to me by a friend that I didn't have to totally do without the advice from this useful source. A friend sent me this link to a very helpful article (lots of applications on the spiritual damage complaining can do):

In your church office: Keep It Simple, part one

A cell phone’s ring tone during a meeting of ministry assistants sparked a conversation about how complicated life is today as compared to just a few short years ago. One of the youngest of the group remarked, “Even I remember when multitasking was something computers, not assistants, did. I think I was more productive then. For sure, I was less stressed.”

Experience in the church office leads many assistants to believe the key to achieving the maximum joy from work lies in keeping things as simple as possible. The process starts with making wise choices—decisions designed to manage your job and your life effectively.

• Delegate what you can
Volunteers can take over many hours of your work week to free your time for the kinds of tasks that cannot be delegated. Granted, enlisting and training volunteers takes time and effort. And there are some obvious disadvantages to relying on unpaid help. But, done well, delegation will simplify your days.

• Identify avoidable negatives
Worrying about the future, ruminating over the past, being involved with gossip, remaining in outgrown friendships, indulging in harmful habits, setting unrealistic standards for yourself and others—imagine the tranquility you could gain by discarding these life-complicating behaviors.

• Trim your tasks
Today’s alternative to delegate is eliminate. What do you habitually say yes to that you could say no to?

Ask yourself:
• Does it really need to be done?
• Does it need to be done right now?
• Does it need to be done this way?

We tend to hold on to old habits and notions even if we are not satisfied with the results. Most likely there is a better way. Look for the most simple technique to achieve the desired outcome. Moving beyond the “we’ve always done it this way” syndrome is a huge first step toward implementing new techniques.

Get even choosier about how you spend your time. Take a serious look at your week’s agenda. Identify things which give you a low return on your time and effort investment; cut them from your routine.

• Seriously unclutter “stuff”
Church offices can be collecting places for all sorts of (is there a better word for it?) stuff. Gain control by having a proper place for each item that belongs in the office and a system for moving things that don’t belong there to more appropriate places.

Ask yourself:
• Do I need to keep this item?
• Does it need to be kept in the office?
• Where is the best place for this item?

Every office needs a workable policy for ditching things. If you have one, use it. If you don’t, see what can be done to get a policy in place.

Unclutter your personal space as well. The more things one has, the more time and energy must be devoted to caring for them. Go for quality rather than quantity. Having fewer possessions—only what you use, need, and enjoy—allows you to appreciate each more fully.

Nothing is worse than working incredibly hard on something and to later find out your efforts accomplished little. All of you who work in church communications, work very hard at what you do and you want to make certain your hard work results in eternal life changes. To help you do that, the following resources will help you plan, measure, and evaluate your work.

Over 2,500 years ago, Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." I would propose that an unexamined church communications program isn't worth all the hard work you put into it.

Measure and evaluate your work so that it won't be in vain, but will accomplish all it can to bring people to Jesus and to help them grow to Christian maturity in Him.

VIDEO: How to plan, measure, and evaluate church communication effectiveness

When you have advertised a church need, such as when you want volunteers to help with a ministry in the church, if you don't get the response you want, how do you respond?

Many churches respond by assuming that: 1) by simply doing the PR they communicated the need and that people will respond; 2) that if people did not respond that the church needs to improve the way the message was presented, e.g. be more cutting-edge, catchy, or interesting; or 3) that people simply don't care about others or helping the church these days.

As this video will show you none of these assumptions are correct and through careful planning and evaluation of your church communications you can make a huge difference in how people will respond to your church communications.

This is an extremely important video for your church staff to watch as a group—it is guaranteed to bring up some lively discussion that should result in a more effective communication program for your church.

VIDEO: How to create and use church communication surveys, how to decide what really works

Because we all tend to communicate in ways that are most comfortable to us and because, as church leaders, we make decisions for people, in this time of changing communications, we may be totally missing out on what the types of communications our audience needs for them to hear the gospel message or our challenges to discipleship growth.

How do your various audiences take in your messages? What communication channels do they access the most?

Most of us if we are honest really don't know. This is where a survey can be extremely helpful. This webinar/video will show you how to do one for your church.

One bit of advice--before you do the survey, pray that the Lord will make your heart open to make changes whatever the results might be. Nothing hurts your credibility more than asking people for their opinion and then ignoring it totally when they give it to you.

VIDEO: Church Communication FORMS: to help you plan, measure, and evaluate communication effectiveness

This video goes over a set of forms that will help you be more effective in your church communication ministry. It shows you step-by-step how to use them and explains why they are useful for ministry.

Many problems in church communications planning and management can be solved if the church uses forms because forms take opinions about communications and helps you effectively evaluate the validity of your opinions.

For example, if someone says: "The web is the best way to advertise!" and another person on staff responds, "No, nothing beats bulletin inserts and postcards!" the use of forms puts this discussion into an objective evaluation of what works best.
