If there was ever a time our nation needed grace and prayer it is now. No matter what our political affiliation, we do well to remember Paul's words:
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4
Remember too, that he was commanding (in obedience to our Lord) that people pray for the emperor who would one day kill him.
In praying for the government, Paul affirms we do it for peace so we can focus on the main thing—introducing people to Jesus as Savior and helping them grow to mature disciples. Long after all earthly governments will have fallen to dust, the people we have helped to come to know Jesus will continue with us to serve and praise Him throughout eternity.
